The material is chosen, the geometry is determined, and the tolerances are written into the drawing. Only then does the question of surface treatment come to the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That order costs. Surface treatment is one of the most important processes in the manufacture of electronic components, because it determines properties such as electrical conductivity, solderability and corrosion resistance. Properties that the product must live with throughout its entire life. That is why we at Chem-Tec Plating often take on a different role than that of a pure supplier: We advise before we coat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the choice of coating cannot be postponed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each coating has its own profile of strengths and pitfalls, and they behave differently depending on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take gold. Gold provides a low and stable contact resistance and is therefore often used for connectors, switches, circuits and semiconductors. But gold rarely stands alone. Nickel is typically applied as an underlying coating because it prevents other metals, such as copper, from diffusing into the gold surface. And then there is the layer thickness, which is an important consideration in itself when coating electronics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silver can be an alternative to gold. It provides better electrical and thermal conductivity and has strong soldering properties, making it useful in several connector applications. However, silver has a tendency to silver migration, which must be considered in the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tin provides excellent soldering properties. However, pure tin plating can form small metal protrusions, the so-called whiskers, which can cause short circuits. The tin\/nickel combination solves part of the problem in certain applications: It is highly corrosion resistant, has a formidable covering power and does not require underlayment for copper-containing materials. It is an obvious choice for battery contacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four metals, four different trade-offs. And each trade-off changes with the shape of the part, the material, and the function the component must fulfill. That&#039;s why the choice cannot be treated as a footnote at the end of development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The consultation starts in the development process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our experience is that the best results come when the customer contacts us early in the development process. In the sales department, we work with our experienced technicians to guide you on which surface treatment is best suited for the specific product. When the surface is considered from the start of the development process, the choice of coating becomes ideal rather than random.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often help clarify three questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How the shape of the workpiece affects the surface treatment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What layer thickness does the coating require?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which coating is best suited for the purpose?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note the first point. Geometry affects processing. In practice, this means that an early conversation can change the very design of the component, not just the choice of metal. The advice is not a service on top of production; it is part of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe best time to discuss plating is before the drawing is locked. The design of the part, the layer thickness and the choice of coating are all interconnected, and the earlier we are involved in the development, the better the end result,\u201d says Bo Hvid Mikkelsen, CEO of Chem-Tec Plating A\/S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The experience behind the advice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advice is only worth something if there is production behind the words. We started coating printed circuit boards in the 1980s. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, we gold-plated billions of springs for phones. Today, we handle items for many different segments of electronics, including medical equipment, audio, transportation and measurement equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This experience has given us a production facility that is designed for the reality of electronics. We can coat large quantities of electronic parts in both bulk and in tape, what is called reel-to-reel. We have two lines for tape production, and they open up some possibilities that are difficult to achieve otherwise: one-sided plating from an edge at a controlled depth or stripes along the tape in nickel, tin, gold and silver. For pins, contacts and the like, where only small areas need to be coated, tape production can make more sense than coating the entire item.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scale is flexible in both directions. Our own laboratory performs chemical and other analyses of the processes to ensure that they function optimally. The equipment includes, among other things, an atomic absorption spectrophotometer with the ability to analyze up to 67 elements, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, metal microscope with equipment for micro-grinding and Hull cells. All analysis results and adjustments are stored in a database for at least 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In production, we carry out continuous quality checks before, during and after treatment. High quality is present throughout the entire process, from prototype to product, and regardless of whether a single item or thousands of items are produced, our employees ensure a very low rejection rate. Our quality policy states that we must provide qualified advice to the customer on which surface treatment is best suited for the purpose. We take that statement literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means for your next product<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For developers and buyers in the electronics industry, this means one thing: Invite your plating supplier in while there is still room for change. Early clarification of the three questions of doubt eliminates the surprises that otherwise appear late in the process, when they are most expensive to fix.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when production is running, logistics don&#039;t have to be your headache.
